Thin film intumescent coatings are most commonly applied to steelwork. Under normal conditions these coatings resemble traditional paint. However should a fire break out the increase in temperature triggers a chemical reaction which causes the coating to expand to many times its original size. In this expanded form they provide passive fire protection properties which protect the surface they have been applied to.
